Vaulted Ceiling in dining room (13Nov10)

We finally acquired some insulation. I have been struggling to decide how the vaulted ceiling should be done. Because there is no attic and the roof has no soffit, there is no way of creating an airflow to stop condensation and rot in the timber. After lots of googling and talking to suppliers, the way to go is to prevent the warm air in the room from getting to the timber in the first place. This means there is no condensation and therefore no rot.

We will insulate between the rafters, then use a membrane over the top, then slabs, preferably insulated with kingspan.

A better way would be closed cell foam sprayed between the rafters and then insulated slab, but this is too expensive.
